Child and Teen Health

School nurses can help your children with their emotional health, self esteem, poor sleep and advice around puberty. They have a School Nursing Advice Line helpline 07813451034 (Monday to Friday 9 am -4.30 pm)

Counselling: All local schools offer counselling within the school. Further external counselling is available through self referral to the CLD trust or by phone on 01432 269245

Parenting Support: The Herefordshire council website has excellent information on support available locally. This includes an early help and advice team. This confidential service is open to all families living in Herefordshire, with a child or children aged 0 to 18 years, or up to 25 years old for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The friendly and professional team will listen to your concerns and offer advice and support to help you and your family. Their number is 01432 260261, with more information on the website here.

There are also parenting courses which come strongly recommended by the CAMHS service.

Health visitors: The health visitor advice line provides parents/carers of 0-5 year olds in Herefordshire with advice from the health visiting team about a child’s health or development. Parents and carers can seek advice about a wide range of topics such as breastfeeding, bottle feeding, sleep, toileting, behaviour, eating, minor injuries/ailments, parenting support and much more.

The health visitor advice line is managed by a Health Visitor and runs Monday-Friday 9am-4pm (excluding bank holidays and weekends). If you leave a message outside of these hours we will respond within one working day and if at weekends/bank holidays this will be our next working day.

Call 07870 682711 for support from a health visitorMore here.

All Self Referrals

There are many services you can self refer to, without seeing a nurse of GP:

If you are a carer you have a legal right to a free assessment of your own needs by Herefordshire Adult Social Services. This is called a carer’s assessment.

The carer’s assessment is not a test about your ability to care. It helps identify what you need, the physical, emotional and practical help, to carry on your caring role. You have the right to have your needs considered when decisions are being made about support for the person you care for. This will include any education, training, work or leisure activity that you would like to take part in.

In your assessment, we will consider issues such as:

  • Finding time for yourself
  • The effect caring is having on your health and well-being and your relationships with others
  • Whether the person you’re caring for is getting enough help and support
  • Any additional help that local or national organisations could offer

Contact Adult social Care to request a carer’s assessment. Call 01432 260101 or email ASCAdviceandReferralTeam@herefordshire.gov.uk.

Around Vaccinations (non travel)

The NHS routine vaccination schedule can be viewed here

Every October we delivery our Flu Vaccination clinics, and you will be invited by text message if you are eligible. Please make sure your contact details are updated

We also deliver:

  • Pneumococcal (Streptococcal pneumonia) vaccinations to the at risk population and the >65 years
  • Herpes Zoster (shingles) vaccination to those eligible for this
  • Covid -19 vaccinations when permitted and stocks available
  • Whooping cough vaccines in pregnancy (usually after the 20 week scan)
  • RSV vaccines– This new program for 75-80 years is to protect against a nasty virus that causes winter respiratory infections and pneumoniae. We will be running special clinics for this. Read more here.
  • FLU Vaccine- We offer flu vaccines from the start of the season (date determined by NHS England). We usually run a big weekend clinic and then ‘catch up’ clinics, for patients >65 years and those ‘at risk’. Read more here. For 2024 the text messages to invite people have already gone out, and we will be phoning those with no mobile number on record.
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine- All children are offered this (and 2 doses gives long term protection) but if you missed your full two dose course then we can do catch ups on the NHS program. In 2024 there has been a resurgence of measles outbreak and so we advise all patients to be aware of their vaccination status. Read more here. You can check yours by logging into the NHS app on your smartphone or computer

We pride ourselves on our good uptake of public health vaccinations at Kingstone Surgery. They are important to protect yourself and your children from infectious disease.

Hearing tests

We are no longer able to offer hearing tests and wax removal at the surgery, as the NHS does not fund this.

However, you can book hearing tests directly if you are > 50 years. If you are <50 years and you are concerned about your hearing, please book an appointment with a GP.

REMEMBER: sudden and unexpected severe loss of hearing is an emergency, and you should ask for a same-day appointment. This is not often appreciated by patients.

You can self refer for hearing tests if you are >50 years

Travel Vaccinations

Some (not all) travel vaccinations are available on the NHS. These are Cholera, Hepatitis A, Polio and Typhoid. For other travel vaccinations you will be charged a fee as it is not an NHS service.

You will be asked to book into a clinic at east 6 weeks before you travel.

You will need to fill in a questionnaire about your travel which will be texted to you. One of these needs to be filled in for each person who is travelling

The practice nurses will be able to give travel vaccinations if you book in at least 6 weeks in advance

Minor surgery session

Dr Teshk Nakshbandi runs our minor surgery clinics. Dr Rosie Wellesley and Dr Laurie Hughes also do joint injections if appropriate.

By arrangement, usually in dedicated clinics at Kingstone Surgery
